Creating a Winning Combination

While many of our horses are home grown superstars, sourced from New Zealand’s strong thoroughbred heritage, we also have an international network of trusted agents. This enhanced global presence not only gives NZ horses and our clients access to Australia and America’s elite eventers but also opens the elusive door to some of Europe’s most prestigious purpose-bred showjumping lines.

So whether you are searching for your next Olympic superstar or a safe yet competitive junior mount, let NZ horse’s industry knowledge, expertise and worldwide contacts work with your aspirations, to uncover your next elite partner.

Not sure where to start? Please contact Ross and Mel to discuss your own unique requirements and goals. We can start developing a list of suitable candidates for you to learn more about.

What is a sale barn?

A sale barn indicates that the primary focus is on sourcing horses that have brain, temperament and ability - in this order - in every horse.

NZ horse’s owner and principle rider, Ross Smith, is a world-class showjumper and eventer. He can spot raw talent and skill in a horse. His priority for his clients is scouting talented youngsters who have the potential to excel at an elite level. This means that the horse you invest in through NZ Horses is hand-picked by a pro... not a horse that has previously been rejected by other professional riders. This is our point of difference compared to many other studs or riding establishments.

A few words from Ross

“NZ horses add value to every horse in our barn according to its individuality - no factory production line here.

We think outside the square and train and nurture each individual horse, facilitating the horse’s growth and progress and allowing them to take full advantage of their natural scope and talent.

Previous young horses found and produced by NZ horse include Woodburn ridden by Phillip Dutton, Ying Yang Yo ridden by Boyd Martin, Vettori ridden by Stuart Tinney just to name a select few. But just as importantly NZ Horses recognizes that an equine acquisition isn’t just about buying a horse, it’s more about creating a winning combination. Mel is adamant that a large part of the process during an equine acquisition is consulting with the client.

We understand that every buyer values certain traits in horses differently so matching a rider to a horse is about meeting certain priorities – not just finding a rider a horse.

By really discovering what a rider needs and wants are, we can be sure that we are creating a good combination.

Every horse sold by us has to represent NZ Horses now and in the future – not just fill an immediate competition goal.” - Ross Smith
