We cater to coaches looking for a location to host lessons right through to students seeking in-house private tuition from a dedicated coach.

Tuition with Ross Smith - Director - NZ Horses:

Ross is an elite showjumper and eventer and coaches regular lesson on location. A horseman with more than 40 years experience in the saddle, Ross has a distinctive teaching style that is both enjoyable and effective.

“When I teach it’s all about getting the rider to understand their horse and become effective, aware and adaptive. My own equestrian experiences has allowed me to become in-tune with my students and help them build their confidence. This in turn provides them the ability to realize their personal and competitive goals.”

Ross says his passion to pass on horsemanship skills to his student is driven by his inate curiosity to understand what the needs of a horse are from a rider's perspective.

Self reflection is a large contributor to Ross’ success as a coach, and he’s the first to admit that all horses and riders have their quirks. Ross is also very intuitive when it comes to his students and understands that each rider has different expectations, support requirements and goals.

"I look at the horse and look at the rider and find a middle ground where we can coach both parties can excel. At the end of the day I’m all about sharing knowledge and ensuring the horse and rider have a happy and productive experience."
